《Eyes of the World》

《Eyes of the World》において写真とは、世界を記録する装置というよりも、見ることによって世界が分節されていく、その過程の痕跡である。

Eyes of the World

To see is not simply to receive what lies before us.

The gaze is always already directed before the act of seeing begins. A landscape does not present itself as a uniform field of visibility. Certain signs are singled out, while others recede into the background.

Water, trees, shadows in the grass, reflected light.
What organizes these photographs is not the presence of these things themselves, but their relation to an object that has yet to appear within the frame. Through this relation, the elements of the landscape are reorganized into another order.

A trace is not a trace in itself.
It becomes one only through the gaze that reads it as such.

What matters here, then, is not what has been photographed, but what is being sought within the image.

The gaze does not simply discover its object.
It produces, within the landscape, the conditions through which that object can emerge.

In Eyes of the World, photography is less a means of recording the world than a trace of the process through which seeing divides, organizes, and brings the world into view.
